Choosing the Right Sleeping Bag for Your Kid
Tuesday, August 4th, 2009Identifying the right sleeping bag for your kid can become an unexpectedly challenging experience. Like shopping for an adult sleeping bag, deciding on the right size and appropriate temperature rating are important in selecting a child’s sleeping bag. One additional item adults do not have to be concerned with is design since most adult sleeping bags only come in solid colors or very basic patterns. Children are often picky, but fortunately many styles are available for them!
Kids’ sleeping bags made by companies such as Coleman, Eureka, and Slumberjack are mostly sized for older children and teens. If you are shopping for a toddler or youth, you will probably have a difficult time finding a traditional style bag your child will not slip and slide through. In these instances, it might be better to choose a bag manufactured by a company that specializes in sleeping bags for kids. Two of the more popular manufacturers of toddler and youth slumber bags are Bazoongi Kids and Wildkins.
Most slumber bags are designed for indoor use or warm weather only and thus have no temperature rating. They are comfortable for your child and are easily carried. Small children love the many styles and themes they come in. Frogs, butterflies, cowboys, and many other fun designs are available. Some even feature an built-in pillow.
For use in the outdoors and in cooler weather, a traditional style sleeping bag is a better choice. They are available in various temperature ratings that indicate the amount of cold protection they can give. For all-weather camping, they are much better, even for smaller children. Blankets or extra clothing can help take up any extra space if used for a small child. As a bonus though, they will be able to use it for several years as they grow into it.
